Hello every one, This is Anwar, introducing Wiki. Wiki is a website that can be collaboratively edited.
Here comes the question: Why is collaboration needed in a high school classroom? Previously (a couple decades ago) inventions were done by single person but now inventions are collaborative efforts. Lets Look at Apple Ipad and Wikipedia; great examples of collaborative effort. We need to teach collaboration in our classes to make them efficient team members.
Students in K12 do projects and labs in groups or teams. They need to work in team and present as a team. They need a canvas to share. A round table to sit around and talk about the project. Wiki serves this purpose.
Wiki is the tool to collaborate Its easy to use Can be learnt quickly And Free of cost.
STORY BOARD PHASE 2
Wiki doesn’t need any special investment or tools. It just needs A computer, An Internet connection, Browser and definitely a team Almost every K12 school in USA has these tools.
The first wiki was developed by an American Computer Programmer “Ward Cunningham” on March 25, 1995 and named after the Hawaiian word “wiki” means quick. The purpose was to collaborate software development.
Story Board Week 6 Update
Now Wiki is not just being used by the computer professionals or corporate sector, but also by several schools.
Like the school “West wood” in our neighborhood was nominated for best educational wiki
The wiki usage statistics are fascinating. Since 2005, wikis have been made more user friendly. There are 5 top service providers in this field:
PBworks, Wetpaint, Wikia, and Google Sites. Wikispaces being on the top.
As of 10/10/2011 Wikispaces has given away 433927 free wikis for K-12 education!
Wikispaces started in 2005. In 2008 had 390,000 wikis, in 2009 had 900,000 wikis up and running. Not a S curve yet, probably still a J shaped curve.
In 2008 had 920,000 registered users, in 2009 had 22,0000,000 registered users. Not a S curve yet, probably still a J shaped curve.

Anwar, I think you have made a good beginning to your project. I especially like that there is not too much information on each slide. I have a lot of trouble with trying to put way too much stuff on each page and the reader can get lost easy. Good work. 10/6/11 Jenny Jarvis
